This week was a little out of the ordinary with student-led conferences and two half days, but the kids are constantly learning! Here’s what we accomplished this week:
Student-led conferences were a hit! All of the kids did a fantastic job showing what they are learning in school. I hope you had as much fun as they did! Please hold on to the student portfolios until after the holiday, then return them on Monday, May 5th. Also, please return the parent feedback form as soon as possible. I appreciate your feedback!
This week we began learning consonant blends. We learned three so far, "bl," "br," and "dr." The kids made their own flash cards and learned some new words that use these blends.
We read another folk tale this week; it came from the Pueblo Indians of North America. "Arrow to the Sun" was a story about a child of the sun who made his way back to meet his father by being made into an arrow. He had to pass through a series of tests to prove himself but he passed them all. When he finally returned to earth, he brought the sun’s power with him.
We recorded the results of our celery experiment this week. What we noticed is that some colors worked better than others. The pink, yellow, and green colors permeated the stem and extended into the leaves. Some other things that happened were that the water was lower– due to the celery drinking it or due to evaporation. Also, our celery got pretty droopy after a few days.
We have still been observing the changes in the cherry blossom by our classroom. This week there are small green cherries starting to grow and the leaves are bigger and darker green than last week.
We are getting ready to plant! We have put soil in our pots and when we return from the break, we will plant our seeds to watch, chart and measure how they change over time.
We finished up the week with another experiment, this time using ice. We saw how ice can change by melting. We will also leave some ice in a cup over the holiday and see what happens when we return!
*Have a happy and safe holiday! We will see you back at QISS on Monday, May 5, 2014! Please remember that Monday is our library day so don’t forget to bring back your books! *
