We practiced making up addition and subtraction story problems and the kids had to decide whether the story was talking about taking away (subtraction) or joining (addition). They practiced making the plus and minus signs with their fingers.
We introduced the vowel combination “ou” this week and read two books about birds and insects. We made anchor charts for each so that we can begin to classify animals.
The kids learned about insects and wrote a sentence describing one or more of the characteristics of insects.
We watched a video about communities and compared and contrasted them to schools. We talked about rules and rights, conflicts and cooperation. We also talked about the leaders in both the community and in our school, recognizing principals, teachers, nurses, counselors, bus drivers and student leaders.
We read the book “Mouse Count” and talked about courage. The mice had to be brave and sneaky to get away from the snake! Ask your child about the story.
The students listened to a book about birds and then chose different birds to research and write about. They also drew excellently realistic pictures of the birds they chose. Be prepared to learn about peacocks, roadrunners, chickens, flamingos, kiwi birds, and eagles at our key assignment!
Kindergarten differentiated between the "ch," "sh," "wh," and "th" sounds by playing a game and matching the appropriate pictures to the appropriate sound.
We sequenced daily events in math and the kids illustrated things that they do in the morning, around noon time, and at night.
We also introduced the vowel combination “oi” and read a poem about American coins– the penny, the nickel, the dime and the quarter. Then we created our own coins. :)
Wreck it Ralph will be playing in the school theatre tomorrow, Saturday, February 22, from 1:00-3:00 in the afternoon. Come out and enjoy the movie with your QISS family!
We have a new student this week! His name is Sunny Jiang and he will be a part of our kindergarten class. If you see him around school, be sure to welcome him to QISS!
