Homework Expectations
Homework at the kindergarten level is supposed to be short, sweet, and relevant to what we are learning in class. I was sending homework home almost daily but now that we've combined classes with Pre-K, I've decided to reduce it to 2-3 times a week. At this level, I will not punish or scold any student for not doing or not returning their homework. Rather, to instill good habits in them at a young age, I would like to reward those students who DO do their homework. We have just started a new homework incentive. Each student has a reward chart like this one. I give the students a sticker for themselves and a sticker for their chart every time they return homework to me. When they finish filling up a colored pencil, they will get a small prize of their choice (out of my selection). When they fill up all the pencils, they will receive a bigger prize that we will decide on together. I hope that the extra practice they are doing will help solidify the concepts that we are learning together in class and will help them make connections to everyday life!

We have begun learning about blends! So far we have only learned bl and br, but the kids understand that a blend is when two consonants are put together. Instead of sounding them out individually, they make one cohesive sound. This homework helps them identify common blends that they hear and use everyday.

Since we have been looking at changes in the sky, we are beginning to track the changes in the moon. Please help your child to draw the moon and how it changes each night. Please use the black crayon that is inside your child's folder.
March 4, 2014
Since we have been discussing different kinds of animals that we share our earth with, this worksheet goes along with both our current unit of study as well as where the students are phonetically. They should be able to complete this worksheet using vowels and vowel combinations that we've already covered using Jolly Phonics.

Kindergarten- practice your spelling words!
January 25-February 9, 2014
Please read with your child for 20 minutes each day. Ask them to help you read the words that they know or others that they can easily sound out. Then record the book(s) you've been reading in our reading log to be returned to school on February 10th. Also, please use IXL.com for math practice- kindergarten should be working on addition and subtraction and pre-k can choose their focus.
homework for January 8, 2014
Since we have been discussing different Earth materials and the things that are created with them, I would like for you to help your child find things around the house made of metal, plastic, wood and cloth. They may draw a picture of the things that they find or try to write the names of the objects. If they would like to bring any of them in to share with the class, that would be wonderful!
Kindergarten: Do one of your spelling activities to practice your spelling words!

HOMEWORK FOR NOVEMBER 5, 2013
Please play "Monster Squeeze" tonight as homework. We are working on comparing the numbers 1-10 using the words "greater than," "less than," or "bigger than," and "smaller than." The students played the game in class yesterday so they should know how the game is played. They just need to cut out their own personal number lines and their two "monsters." Let the games begin!
Homework for October 30, 2013
I would like for the kids to write and draw about what they will be for
Halloween. If it is possible, I would like them to begin their writing
with "I will be a ______________ for Halloween." If they want to write
more about their costume, please encourage them to do so. For pre-k,
please try to have them sound out and write what their costume will
be.
Also, I am sending home a book today that we have been
reading in class about Halloween. It is called "What will you be for
Halloween." It uses our sight words for this week "he," "she," and
"will." Please ask your student to read you their book this evening and
let me know via the parent communication book if they did so (so I can give them
their sticker tomorrow).

Homework for October 29, 2013
In math we are talking about comparing different weights using a balance. Please have your student compare each set of pictures and circle the object that is heavier. As an extension activity, they can draw two Halloween objects on the back and circle the heavier object.
Homework for October 9, 2013
We are practicing the "teen" numbers (11-19), so connect the dots worksheets are good practice for naming and ordering these numbers. Also, our sight words for the week are "like," "to," and "my" so it is great writing, reading, and sentence-making practice to trace and write their own sentences using our sight words this week.
If you would like more "connect the dots" worksheets, there are a lot of cool ones at http://www.abcteach.com/directory/fun-activities-dot-to-dot-892-2-1

We seem to be having some technical difficulties with Raz-kids, so please have your students read at least 2 books over the break on tumblebooks.com. The link can be found on the "links" page of this website.
When you go to tumblebooks, click on the far left section that says "Tumblebooks Library- e-books for e-kids." This will bring you to the log-in page. The username is qiss and the username is books. We practiced using tumblebooks in the computer lab this week so hopefully they will remember how to do it! There was a reading response form sent home with your child that I would love to be used alongside tumblebooks.
I also sent home a paper for students to practice writing their first and last names and their numbers. Thank you for reinforcing good writing at home!
